Pairing Mexican Food & Beer

If you’ve ever eaten at an upscale dining establishment, you may have browsed through their wine list. You’ll notice that certain wines are listed as pairing with certain foods better than others. Believe it or not, this is true for just about every type of food and beverage, especially Mexican food. If you’ve ever stopped in at Verde Kitchen, then you’re familiar with our top-notch Mexican cuisine and our finely crafted cocktails. And even if you haven’t, consider this a crash course in learning what beers go with what dishes.

Light & Fresh

If you’re in the mood for something that’s not too heavy on your palettes, such as a quesadilla or a shrimp fajita, an ice-cold import will do the job splendidly. Pacifico, Tecate, and Corona all work well for these, especially with lime-infused dishes. If you plan on injecting some spice into the mix, we recommend an American IPA.

Beefy & Tender

If you’re in the mood for some meat, then there are plenty of dishes that can fulfill this desire. Pork and Carne Asada are very popular Mexican exports and have found several fans among Americans who enjoy their meat. For these occasions, it’s best to settle on a brown ale such as Guinness or Newcastle. A German Boch is also favorable if available.

Spicy & Sudsy

Authentic Mexican cuisine has no shortage of dishes that offer a spicy kick to the mouth. Some are more adept than others at handling these foods which have sent many running for a glass of ice water. If you plan on oiling on the spice, we recommend accentuating your meal with a pilsner beer. Drinks with heavy carbonation can actually intensify the spiciness of the meal and not in the way that makes them enjoyable.

Creamy & Pale

If you’re not feeling the affection for spice or sizzle, fear not. Mexican cuisine is full of dishes that are accentuated with creamy cheese and sauces that are more on the cooling side of the spectrum and not the fiery one. Should you decide to go this route, we recommend an IPA such as Harpoon or Dogfish 90 Minute. These will pair well with all the melted cheese and you’ll be glad you went right for one.
